Staff or Token

A vital safety device handed by the signalman to the driver or fireman of a train entering a single-track line. The staff, or token, carries a lock and the signalling equipment at the opposite end of the single track line cannot be operated without it. This ensures another train cannot enter the single track section in the opposite direction. The driver hands the staff or token to the signalman when he reaches the end of the single track section and collects the staff for the next section. The device is often carried on a large hoop to facilitate easy exchange and as one token is passed by signalman to driver the token for the previous section is exchanged from driver to signalman simultaneously .

Nice one Sam, captured him spot on. It looks like the weather held too,we were going up the A19 about this time and it clouded over,i thought..oh 'eck!! Sam won't be happy if this lot blows over.

Cheers Neil, this wasn't Saturday mate, I only got as far as Lockwood and turned back when I saw the sky blackening. Not one to be beaten though I had another go yesterday and the weather was spot on, Came home with successful shots from here, Thorton le Dale, Brompton by Sawdon and Hunters Sty so a very good day. Just as well you drank the beer for me since if I'd odne it I might have had a hangover and missed out on a good day :o).

Many thanks !

It does for me Andy but that old soak Neil** needs his Saturday session by all accounts, well at least that gives him an excuse on one day at least for his state of confusion :o).

I'm pleased you like it mate , thank you !
