In the 70's the Friendship Store was accesible a.o. only by employees of the nearby embasies and their families. I remember the ground floor was the food floor, the 1st floor was full of textiles and the third, our family's favorite, porcelain vases, tea sets, potery in the traditional Chinese style.
I think there has been a substantial addition made to the building in the ground floor.

This must be the eastern side entrance (the supermarket), not the main entrance (which is facing south). The shadows from the trees and bicycles also indicates this. See this page for another photo of the 友谊商店, also from the 1970s: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/16877819

To johan_tanying: you are totally correct, this is the eastern side with a side entrance which was closest to the embassy area, that's why it was mainly used by the diplomatic staff and their families. To me it was the "main" entrance. I have to change the title. You have great pictures of buildings from the 50s - 70s. I will let you know when I put more of my 70s pictures of Beijing in Panoramio. Too bad they don't recognize historical pictures in Google Earth.
