(1973) The SW side of the Island was home for the British and Americans assigned here prior to WW2. Housing, kitchen, pharmacy, radio shack, Recreation center and machine shop made up some of this little community. Some families accompanied the higher ranking personnel. The Pan-Am Clipper ships would land in the lagoon and passengers would lay over at the hotel that was built for them in the late 1930's (Burned some years earlier). A "runway" was marked out using poles with lanterns marked the edge of the safe area for the sea plane to land. The majority of the lagoon was to shallow for safe landing. A Light House Monument in memory of the "Samoa Clipper" is located near the southern shallow channel entrance to the lagoon.
