What are your thoughts when standing at one of the world's greatest monuments? Respect and fragility, perhaps. Honestly, when I took this photograph 33 years ago, I was thankful that I didn't slip and break my neck since the stones surrounding the Parthenon are as slick as ice, worn smooth by all the footsteps that proceeded me.
I remember waiting and waiting to get a picture without the clutter of tourists as if the dignity of this place was tainted by their presence. Finally, I gave up and took this shot. Today I'm glad it included a father and his kids, and others since that is what sustains a civilization. The Parthenon is really just a temple of stones in decay.
