The Atlanta skyline from Stone Mountain, GA, 1975

A large granite dome rising out of the plain to the east of Atlanta, Stone Mountain is now a park featuring a carved bas-relief of the generals of the Confederacy on its side. Perhaps not rivalling Mount Rushmore in grandeur, it nonetheless inspires its own awe, and what's more, you can climb to the top of it on foot.

In 1975, you could see Atlanta as it lay, from south on the left to north on the right, ready to fill in the wooded neighborhoods between the clumps of skyscrapers with more and bigger of the same.
