I was stationed here on the mountain in 1973-1974 with the USAF. There were 29 of us living up there at the time. I worked in the diesel power plant. My hobby at the time was Amateur Radio. I operated under the Greek call of SV0WXX. My call sign now is WA4LJJ. Greece is a most beautiful country and the people are second to none. I have many pleasant memories of my 12 tour there. I worked on the system (Up stream at Coltano, Italy) for three years and have been researching as much as I can find. I'd love to be able to locate your distant end in Italy (near Martina Franca). It's one of the few I haven't been able to find. Drop a note here if you have any further info.
BTW, I'm also an Amateur -- my call is my username. You could also look me up and drop me a line directly...
Thanks & 73, Joe

I was stationed as the Site Medic here from Oct79-Oct 80. There were 26 AF personnel, and between 10-14 Greek Nationals who worked on the site. I have fond memories of my year on Lefkada. I have stayed in contact with a few from the site, but wish I had kept in touch with Phil Glavas, Bill Reis, Tom, Spiros, and Yahnnie. I know the site closed along time ago, but I would give anything to have some current photos of what it looks like now. I was told by a friend in Athens who visits the island in the summer, that it looks pretty much like a ghost town up on top of the mountain. Rich "Doc" Minor

I was stationed here when the place was being built back in 1965. Seven of us living in a 8 man tent with a 5KW generator became the first crew of permanent party personnel. The site went active in 1966. Yahnnie was with us then. Twodog sent me some photos showing some of the changes made after I left in October 1966. You guys that came later had it made! I am now wishing I had stayed longer like they wanted me to. I too, have fond memories of Lefkada!

I was TDY to this site in 1970. Spent 4 days upgrading two Sac Green Pine Radios. I was special Maintenance team (Scope Creek)initially based at Camp Darby (Liverno It. and later based on Mt Limbara Sardinia, Italy. I covered all sites from Goremendi Spain through the entire 486L in Italy, 4 sites in Greece and, 4 in Turkey. In 1964-68 I was based in the UK and worked Ringstead UK and several Big Rally 2 sites In Italy and Turkey. This were the forunner to the 486 L System. Spent some time at Coltano training Army troops on the FRC 39 after that site was turned over to Army in 1969. I have a picture Gallery of some of the 486L sites on the www.military.com web site. Look for the blog there under "Any 304X0s here?? Wideband Comm/Radio Relay" for more info from other wideband types. I am also a Amateur WA3OWC. I was IS1DFO on Sardinia It from 1969 to early 71. BTW I even though I TDY to Martina Franca I am also unable to locate it exactly on Google Earth. Direct contact via wa3owc@hotmail.com Tnx & 73s Bill

Well folks I too was stationed here - never thought I would see this place again. I was in '85 I think it was - operated the comm equip up there - the whole enchalata. Once we had a gen drop and I had the comms back up in less than 2 min; best tour I ever had. Was only in 4 years. Took a boat trip out to the isles; hiked Mt Olympus. Also a ham - fixed up the station; kwm equip. I didnt remember the Greeks up there but I remember Yanni and Spiros they are probly no longer with us; I wish I could go back I get tears every time I think about it. I think I remember Phil an Tom too, and the dog she passed away while I was there; cant remember her name; long hair shepherd type; I miss her too. God bless the troops and every one - WA1ZCE. I am 50 now. The picture on Google - Earth is nice, and I got a plaque too. My site is at: http://www.freewebs.com/virtualaviator/ and email is at mrzeta@email.com

I was stationed at Levkas back in June '81-'82 and loved every minute of it. This was my first tour out of tech school (304x0). What an island - and awesome locals too. Made freinds with several Britts that lived in Levkada Town and I remember Yahnnie and Spiros too! ...and the shepherd dog (can't remember her name either). From the Google Earth pics it looks like the site is pretty run down today. Spent many a summer day at the Kathisma Beach on the west coast - anyone remember that one? Internet pics of that beach today - I didn't recognize it - totally commercialzed. Remeber MWR trip to Hellenikon AB and the car ferry - eating Souvlaki. Good times!! I want to go back and visit some day...

Wow -- lots of interest here. I found a lot of the sites, and can email out my .kmz file if any of you are interested. Here is Martina Franca's coordinates: Lat 40°40'30.71"N Lon 17°15'54.42"E
Any of you have the exact coordinates of where the relay on Mallorca (Soller)? I know the site was up on the mountain by the radar site, but there is no trace of it now. I've identified the sites in Spain by finding the concrete pads the held the billboards.

Wow...you guys are bringing back some great memories, and a couple I'd rather forget. ;-) I was a radio troop stationed there exactly the calendar year of '79.
Hey Rich...don't know if you remember me (John Capone) but I definately remember you. Did we have some fun or what? Kinda bummed it's gone. Was gonna try and get back there in the near future. Did Chris Long retire there? How about the International Dance Festival they had every year. One week of solid partying!
