Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Inscribed upon the three wooden crosses......in the centre of picture..are the names of 3 children......Esther Ann Riley aged 11.../....her Brother, Percy Riley aged 9..../....and Rebecca Godson aged 9..../....The headstone to the right - is in memory of colliery worker Alfred Williamson aged 24../...All 3 children drowned in icy water at Plumbley colliery and Alfred Williamson died during his lone rescue attempt on March 16th. 1895....Over one thousand villagers gathered at this spot on the day of the burials....At the time, money was not available for memorials to the children...the simple wooden crosses were only recently added in their memory....A fourth youngster..the older 14 year old Louisa Peat - also playing around the colliery pond.. .was saved by not venturing out onto the thin ice....Dj...
