Begijnhof ~ Amsterdam

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

One of the oldest inner courts in Amsterdam, the Begijnhof is the only inner court which was founded during the Middle Ages, and lies within the Singel — the innermost canal of Amsterdam's circular canal system. It is at medieval street level, which means a meter below the rest of the old city center. Religious women who chose to be less austere than nuns once lived here caring for poor and sick people. Female senior citizens now occupy the neat houses.

It was very pleasant Ian. There was a sign asking people to be considerate to the people living there and not be too noisy.
