When you look at Michigan in Google Earth, you will see that we are surrounded by the enormous size Great Lakes. That is the reason why there are ships this size. The Great Lakes total number of lake freighters is 90, but not all of them are running. Two years ago, only half the fleet was in operation, the economy weakened so much. Last year the number went up to 75 again and I'm not sure how many are out on the water this year. The season only started a month ago. The freighters cannot run during winter, the lakes freeze over. The largest of the ships are 300 m long, but most are around 250 m. That makes this one a 'very short one'.

This city is one of our fun lunch time destinations, about 30 miles to drive. The boardwalk is the longest in Michigan.

Thanks for your interest in this photo, Trin!

Doerthe, thank you for taking the time and explaining these interesting facts. I remember learning at school (Eisenhower was President) about these great lakes. Oh the cold to freeze this massive amount of water! LG Trin.

When I first lived in Michigan, I thought I would not survive the first winter. I was not used to such cold winds, ice, snow. I didn't have a heavy winter coat, nor slacks, nor boots, never needed any of those items in Hamburg. Boy, did I learn fast!

Happy Friday,

Doerthe
