MV Darya Lakshmi making tight left turn N towards Bristol (in distance), taken (via zoom lens) from waterfront promenade at Doane Academy; 18 April 2012, c.13.06.
In part because the deep-water channel (between 35 and 45 ft) is so close to the promenade here, this is the most intriguing part of watching such a behemoth make such a maneuver. There is little room for error-- for example the shoal extending W from Burlington Island (beyond the ship) is well known to be deceptive. Not far from where this ship is here people go wading at low tide.
The tug(s) will stay with the ship till it docks, probably at Fairless Steel in Tullytown (about 4 miles farther on). Beyond Bristol there is no width of river for the ship to turn 180 degrees till it's docked.
