Shallow vernal pool in Blue Oaks Park north of Early Way, Roseville CA

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

These riparian wetlands are dotted with vernal pools, shallow depressions that fill with water in the spring. Each pool has its unique flora and fauna, some with endangered amphibian species. They offer food for waterfowl, such as the great egret here.

The picture was taken from Pleasant Grove Creek Trail (south branch), a bike trail that follows South Branch Pleasant Grove Creek through Blue Oaks Park from Veterans Park to the edge of Woodcreek Golf Club. The trail is accessible from many local streets; this location is just north of Early Way.
