This charming barn with its dovecote carved from limestone, is visible from SH1 at Herbert, but this photo is taken on the property.
The building is deteriorating and the owners who would like to restore it faced with $30 -40,000 of masonry work for that. If we can find millions to send rich yachties to the USA to sail smart boats, surely money can be found to preserve these little gems?
The building is built from Bedding Hill stone - quarried very nearby and built I recall the owner said by a Scott who ran the quarry.
Bedding Hill stone appears to me to be volcanically altered sandstone - but I don't know. It isn't basalt as far as I can see but it is bedded and columnar like many basalt deposits in North Otago.
