Maybe you're right for XIV century, but I have really a doubt. You have to read the iranian poets Omar Khayam or Hafez, they are always glorifying the pleasure in wine and drinking. That restriction of drinking wine is real in Islam but wine never disapeared on good tables in islamic countries. Even now in region of Shiraz the wine is produced and drank. You should better go to see.

Answer to pernic as you know the iranian poets that you mentioned were muslims and it is necessary for muslims to do fundamental of islam . selling, buying and drinking wine is so their aim to saying wine is pure wine that is loving God.you say Hafez, Do you know what is the meaning of Hafez.the translation of Hafez in English is "Keeper in mind", but keeping what? Quran.yes Hafez was kept quran in his mind and was a true shia muslim. I am iranian and i go to shiraz almost every month but i don't see anyone drink wine in public. and it is ordinary beeing lawbreaker in every society.

As wine is a God's gift to humanity it can not be bad. The men invented laws, they pretend to speak in the name of God. And as God never edicted laws agains wine, which he created, God will punish them for this forfaiture....
