The Pondicherry Gate or "Porte de Pondichéry" can be seen in the round defensive structure. This barbican is an addition of the Nayakas (16th-17th century) to better protect the mandapam-gate of old: once the besieger has entered the small rectangular gate, he is surrounded by defenders on the semi-circular parapet, on the rampart and the mandapam.
The gopuram of the Venkataramana Temple can be seen in the background.
