That's a surreal effect, well done on capturing it. "Exceptionally good High Dynamic Ranging" could serve as a fair title I reckon. ;)

The large-radius circle formed around the Sun is quite interesting. I read on Wikipedia that it is possibly an aura, or halo formed as a result of refraction of light by "ice crystals in cold cirrus clouds". Was this photo taken in the morning or evening?

Greetings from South Australia, Andrew

Thanks Andrew. I think this would be late afternoon, and it was a cold day. That could very well be - like a "sundog" that goes all the way around.

Thanks Anne! I'd never seen anything like it either, so walking home from school I had to stop, take out my camera and snap a few pictures!

Yes, I hadn't thought of it but it does look similar. Just around the sun instead.

Very good photo, Phoenix! I've only seen this effect very few times, and only in Calgary. Very good HDR work too! Congrats!

Jessica G. on February 26, 2008

That's interesting, Nawitka. Only in Calgary? Why would that be?

Hi Jessica, great shot! I was surprised reading the comments as these are quite common here. I took pictures of one the other day and there's one today. Guy.

I saw one of these in the Arctic. It was pure white but not as complete an arc as you have captured.
