The ferry ride is about two-and-a-half hours across Pamlico Sound. Escorted by pelicans, it carries foot passengers, bicycles, boats on trailers, cars, trucks and vans, all stuffed with vacation gear and families heading for the isolated beaches of the Outer Banks.
