Sunset Full Moon Rise at Mono Lake

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

These unusual limestone "tufa" rock formations form like the stalactites and stalagmites in caves, but these form underwater when calcium-laden spring water reaches the alkaline water of Mono Lake.

Ansel Adams talked a lot about visualizing the results you want well before you trigger the shutter. I anticipated this shot weeks in advance, then invited the Panoramio and Google+ communities to join me here on the G+/Panoramio Eastern Sierra Photowalk. Over 30 people RSVP'd, and we met in groups of 5 to 25 at various points on the anticipated shooting schedule, posted to the Eastern Sierra Nevada Workshops page on Google+. In the coming weeks participants will be showing their best results in a group here on Panoramio:

It looks LIKE the moon is jumping in the water. Wonderful!
