Onehunga: old Post Office (c.1902)

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The old Onehunga Post Office (c.1902), 120 Onehunga Mall, Onehunga, is now Columbus Coffee. The Post Office was opened by Sir Joseph Ward, and the first European born in Onehunga - Isabella Hutchinson - was present as a special guest at the opening (she died in 1930, aged 86). Opening day was 14 Feb.,1902 - yet, high up in the eaves, set in masonry, is the date '1901'. The building has a Category II listing with the NZ Historic Places Trust, and is an early example of Edwardian baroque post offices (the first Onehunga Post Office had been built of wood in 1885, and demolished in 1926).
