The Chalet was originally built in Scandanavia and exhibited at the 1912 Ideal Home Exhibition in Olympia, London. It was then dismantled and shipped by rail to Symonds Yat where it was reassembled on a site where previously two hotels had stood. One of these hotels was the Great Western Temperance Hotel, both of the hotels had to be demolished as there is a railway tunnel running under the Chalet. It is believed the vibrations from the trains caused structural damage to the previous stone buildings and as the Chalet was timber built it could withstand the vibration.
