this picture was taken in the dutch city of utrecht, in a little courtyard called "abraham dole hof". it used to be the site of one of the numerous convents and abbeys that used to dot the medieval utrecht (then the religious centre of the low lands, the remnants of many of which are still recognizable. this used to be the convent of the order of the karmelites and while the main building was torn down in the 19th century, the curch and several service buildings survived. the house on the right is the old hospital. the tower in the background belongs to another former convent (st. catherines, now a museum).

the text above is not entirely correct. The order was not of the karmelites, but was dedicated to St.Ursula and the 11.000 virgins. The hospital was situated in the alley behind the hof and the house on the right is the "grote schuur"(big shed), where they nursed the people suffering fron the plague.
