the oude gracht (old moat) in the dutch city of utrecht is a canal (and not a moat) dug between the various meanders of the rivers rhine and vecht during the 10th, 11th and 12th century. for centuries this would be the umbillical cord of the medieval city, enabling it to grow from a small settlement around a former roman fortification, to one of the most important trade and religious centres of the lowlands.
