The Prospect of Rural East Cleveland

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The rape seed flowers are almost in full bloom and the North Yorkshire coastal regions seem to be perfect for growing this crop.

This viewpoint, at the top of Upton Hill, gave views across the southern edge of the Cleveland hills over rolling valleys and knolls. Somewhere in the distance (go to full magnification) can be seen one of the last remaining spoil heaps which were common here in this once rich, iron ore mining region. Perhaps the rich minerals in the top soil are good for growing such crops.

The photo is the result of seven separate images stitched in Photoshop!! It's a fairly high resolution picture but worth taking the time to see the enlargement!

NIKOS1954~~~~Much appreciated Nikos :) glad you liked it..

Miguel Bortfeldt~~~~I greet you warmly Miguel and thank you for your appreciation :)

Andy Rodker~~~~I am aware of that old pubs existence on the banks of the Thames..Apparently, it was frequented by many local sailors during their trip to London in coal carrying Colliers..It is thought that the return cargo was human urine which was available in large quantities from many of the London pubs..Why urine? you may ask..Well, it was a principal ingredient in the manufacture of a Mordant which was chemically derived from a process which included the burning of Alum shale. Thankfully, this disgusting commodity was discontinued with the invention of aniline in the late 19th century. BTW, the term "taking the p---" was thought to have had it's roots here!

Thanks for the feed-back Andy and for adding me to your faves list!

To you all, I extend my best wishes and hopes for a happy and peaceful New Year.

Jim

Alum mining was big business in this region for more than 250 years..Fortunes were made from it's extraction!

For those of you who may be interested in the production of Alum look HERE

ijaz ahmad mughal~~~Your fine compliment is much appreciated Ijaz~~~~~Extra wide landscapes are great fun to do..Using a number of consequent images, I join them up in CS3 Photomerge editing package and then apply other editing techniques to sharpen the image and increase/decrease saturation etc. in Lightroom3 :)
