Longyearbyen - the largest settlement and the administrative center of Svalbard has about 2000 inhabitants. The town is located in the valley of Longyeardalen and on the shore of Adventfjorden, a bay of Isfjorden (west coast of Spitsbergen). The town was established 1906 by and named after John Munroe Longyear, whose Arctic Coal Company started coal mining in this year.
