To Cybarite. Far from being a glaciologist, I nevertheless venture the following explanation, hopefully correctly remembered from a guided tour in Greenland: Blue ice is formed when melt water fills and freezes in cracks in glacial, "white" ice, the latter being the result of compression of snow in subzero temperatures. I also believe that the whiteness of glacial ice appears only after pressure is released. And, I agree, a beautiful phenomenon, nicely captured.
