Шарена Џамија - Painted Mosque

This brightly painted Mosque is located on the right bank of the river Pena (Artat) in the old part of town. In this quarter of Tetovo there are many significant Islamic structures such as the Turkish Hamam and the Stone Bridge, both important for their aesthetic and artistic value as well as for the historical inscriptions they contain.

The Painted or Decorated Mosque of Tetovo was built in 1495, its base being widened in 1833 by the Ottoman leader Abdurrahman Pasha, a patron of the arts. In the first half of 19th century, all of the ruling Pashas were very active in building Tetovo, refortifying the town as well as erecting many of its monuments.
