The Island of San Pietro by extension, 51 sq km, the second largest island of the archipelago Sulcis. Its shores are rocky cliffs lapped by clear blue sea, while the interior is covered by a thick Mediterranean scrub, Aleppo pine, rosemary, saw palmetto. In the gull nesting cliffs and Eleonora's falcon. Carloforte is the only inhabited island. It was founded during the reign of Carlo Emanuele III, by a colony of Ligurian fishermen from Tabarka (Tunisia). The Ligurian origin of its inhabitants can be found in the dialect, traditions, customs, urbanism of the country. The island of San Pietro can be reached by ferry, about 30-40 minute crossing from Portsmouth or Calasetta. (From CARLOFORTE.NET)
L'Isola di San Pietro è per estensione, 51 Kmq, la seconda isola dell'arcipelago sulcitano. Le sue coste sono alte e rocciose bagnate da un mare limpidissimo, mentre l'interno è coperto da una folta macchia mediterranea, il pino d'Aleppo, il rosmarino, la palma nana. Nelle sue scogliere nidificano il gabbiano corso ed il falco della regina.
Carloforte è l'unico centro abitato dell'isola. Fu fondata, durante il regno di Carlo Emanuele III, da una colonia di pescatori liguri provenienti da Tabarka (Tunisia). L'origine ligure dei suoi abitanti la si può riscontrare nel dialetto, nelle tradizioni, nei costumi, nell'urbanistica del paese. L'isola di San Pietro si può raggiungere in traghetto, circa 30-40 minuti di traversata, da Calasetta o da Portoscuso. (Da CARLOFORTE.NET)
