An interesting and valuable image jethro. Long gone by the look of the map. There are just a few left in Birmingham owned by the National Trust and preserved for posterity. See here for more information. Best wishes from Wilthire, purdey
That link was TOO MUCH of a trip down memory lane Purdey! Wow, thats just like it was (but my memories, like this photo, were in black and white)
The back to backs where I was dragged up are still there. My grandparents lived four houses away. We renovated ours and had an inside toilet put in (imagine that!).
Thanks for your visit and kindness.
Nortgate backs...looking onto the backs of Hirstgate with the power station chimneys poking over the rooftops. Walked down Northgate this week on the way back from the pet shop on Donny Road...The old terraces are still there, but some of the flats have been...flattened!; so have some of the bungalows on pitt street...took a picture of Riley's shop for posterity...
Are you the worlds most travelled Mexboroite!?
There is considerable danger that I might be. I used to live in a town (after Mexborough) where I once remarked that the only escape was emigration! I guess I never thought it would happen to me.
I especially like your canal at Mexborough photograph, thanks for posting it full size. I look forward to you posting pictures of the Wishing Well, Northgate Workingmen's Club, The Ferry Boat Inn etc.
By the way, you are dead right about the power station chimneys (no longer there, I hear). Riley's shop. No bells ringing there.
BROUGHT BACK LONG LOST MEMORIES DID YOUR PHOTO, IT LOOKS TO ME AS THOUGH IT WAS TAKEN FROM ABOUT NUMBER 14 I LIVED A FEW DOORS UP
Then I await your photographs with interest Northgateonian
Greetings from The South
Great to see this photo on Google Earth for posterity.
I had come across this site in association with Google Earth, called History Pin
I think in time it will be a great record of our former years.
Best wishes from a nostalgic Englishman, Pedro
Well, I have joined HP and have had no luck yet uploading a picture. I will reboot my puter and try. Then I have thousands that I can inflict upon them!
Cheers Peter from - Jethro
