It was a bad period.
today it is not better? I remember seeing a sofa in a tree, put a car on the side on a sidewalk ... it was unbelievable, and everything a few kilometers of island city which is superb. period...
Few people know how much this area has been devastated ... it's like a silent war.
I lived there at 609 E 138 st from 9-1945 to 6-1948.I was 12, it was a rats nest in the apts and a warfest on the streets. There were gangfights very often. Irish dukes, McGintees vs puerto Ricans Jolly Stompers mostly. one side of 138 st was Irish the other Puerto Rican
I went to PS9 on 138st and clark Jr high on 145 st. I would fight every day. I have am olive compextion. So I was a target, hence the fights.
