The quake struck during the middle of the day. Stores were open. Shaken severely to a stand-still with the result of long-term evacuation and cordon, time stopped, the store closed open!
Lo siento Ian.Espero esté usted bien.
Un saludo, Chaydeé.
Well observed Ian. Greetings Berend
Thank you for your concern. I am OK. This photo was taken some weeks after the quake. The whole area had been evacuated and the building closed. The lights were still on when the power was restored, hence the OPEN sign remained on though the store and the whole of the CBD of Christchurch remained under tight cordon.
A few hours later that afternoon there was another aftershock with a shallow quake that measured 5.1, and we certainly felt that quake. I can still fell that quake in my stomach even now as I write to you.
Ian - safely in Brisbane, Australia
The walk through the devastation (and this particular area was only mildly impacted) was an essential part of our preparation for our working with communities that were traumatised by the quakes. I still feel the grief of Christchurch.
