Fataan Wetland in Hualien is the fertile, alluvial plain created by Hualien Creek and Fataan Creek, a place with abundant running springs that nurtures the only inland wetland ecology in Taiwan. The name “Fataan” means “the place full of pigeon peas” in Amis . Visitors are led by the tribal youths into the Fataan tribe to experience the Harvest Festival from the building straw hut, wild vegetable picking, nighttime Harvest Festival celebrations, singing and dancing to the last day’s Palakau activity – all proceed in the traditional way, through these to understand the internality of Fataan and learn about its ecological ethics and wisdoms.
Eco-tourism has become a trend in recent years, and the Fataan Wetlands in Hualien has been attracting more than 150 thousand visitors annually. Converted from Amis tribal grounds, cultural elements like the traditional "palakau" fishing traps have been kept on site; and combined with restaurants nearby that serve Amis cuisine, visitors find Fataan educational and fun.
With dragonflies, butterflies, fish and shrimp hanging both above and beneath the wetlands, this is Hualien's Fataan.
