Taken from the cliffs above the north side of Donner Pass. At the left edge is Interstate 80, which spans almost the entire North American continent, from San Francisco to the New York metropolitan area, and here passes along the north side of Donner Lake. On the far (east) side of Donner Lake is where the ill-fated Donner Party got stuck on their way to California during the winter of 1846-7. Below is Donner Pass Road, and a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail can be seen on the near side of the road at the bottom left. Across Donner Pass Road is Donner Peak (2444 m) rising above the old covered railway. Behind and to the right of Donner Peak is Mount Judah (2518m).
