Ah, but it had already started to grow. After all, our Dutch (!) friends took us there for an evening dinner in the street, precisely because it was such an attractive town. We had to park on a muddy piece of land just outside the old city wall. I recall that we had gambas a la plancha for starters and they were so good that we ordered the same again!
I posted this picture when I saw a Panoramio picture of this street in its present "improved" state. The pretty lady in the pretty green silk dress is my wife, incidentally. She still is.
