This was previously known as Broxbourne Zoo which opened in the 1960s and is "on our doorstep" in Hertfordshire but we knew nothing about it! That is until we received a joint "Feeding the Lemurs" Christmas present! Broxbourne Zoo was apparently known as "the worst zoo in Britain" as the enclosures were small and uncomfortable but the Sampson family purchased the site in 1984 after seeing how poorly the animals were kept and they resolved to re-house the animals into larger enclosures which mimicked their natural habitat making the animals as comfortable as possible. The zoo was closed down for two years to undergo this transformation and, boy, have they done a fantastic job! I couldn't fault any of the animals' enclosures and I always try to pick fault being an animal fanatic! Anyway the only downside for us was that we had chosen my favourite lemur, the Ring-Tail but one had given birth that morning at about the time we arrived and I photographed a mother and baby one hour after the birth! Clearly going in their pen was out of the question and so we "went in" with the Black Lemurs instead and it was fantastic, obtaining the obligatory "lemur on the shoulders" pics all the time worrying if something nasty was going to be deposited down our necks!!! Superb!
