Jeff,

I enjoyed all of your Chinese New Year photos, but especially this one. I would like to know more about this ancient gold money.

Also, I see the color red is a common theme in all the pictures. Is it a significant color in the Chinese New Year?

Cheers,

Leo

Thanks for visiting my gallery. I am glad you like this series. I would like to share the Chinese culture with the friends of Panoramio during Chines New Year in early Feb.

The gold was made in that standard shape and weight as official curreny of money. It is similar to golden coin. This kind of money was started to used from 621. At that time, the money material is copper, iron, silver and gold. The gold money is highest values. Thus, only King, rich businessmen is able to use such large value money. Thus, people use it as decoration and wish they can earn more in the coming year.

Red represent lucky, lively and happy. Traditional Chinese use red color in every ceremonial like wedding party.

Cheers from Hong Kong, Jeff
