Sumpter's middle store

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Taken from Forrester Heights 2012 this long shot on a cheap camera shows the roof form of the Sumpters middle store. it is the pyramidic building with the rectangular roofed lantern. Just forward of it but not really visible is The Red Lion Mill being Anderson and Mowatt's store. Built to the same design of John Lemon these two 1874-75 poured-in-place concrete buildings are two of the oldest extant buildings on the Harbour Block. Now masked by buildings erected in about 1882 on the same title in front and on the same block behind them, they can be seen from an alleyway between them and by visiting the tenants who currently occupy them. As of 2012 one is a retailer and perfectly happy for visitors to gawp and the other is a furniture manufacturer who may be willing to let you look inside. Both tenants are keenly aware of the heritage of their lovely old bunkers!
