Trikala, Pyli - Porta Panagia

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The passage from the southwest region of Thessaly plain to the mountains of Pindos, unique from many years ago, is what form the two opposite mountains, Koziakas and Itanos, bordering the root of the river Portaikos or Portrait . A wooded area with breathtaking natural landscape, rich flora and fauna. Nearby there is a small town Pyli, a beautiful picturesque town, located just 18 km from Trikala.

A short distance from the town stands the church of Porta - Panagia, located in the settlement of Porta Panagia. To get there, there are two ways. To ascend to the edge of the village and pass the old stone arch bridge or cross the narrow bridge viaduct, across from the building of high school - high school.

The Church of Porta - Panagia dates from 1283 and is said to have been built on the site of an ancient temple of Athena or Apollo, by the emperor John Angelos Komnenos Doukas. Characteristic of the church, two valuable icons of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Both within the church and the precinct, there are scattered pieces of ancient marble. The church's interior impresses with simple decoration and unusual relationship archaic and Byzantine elements. The Porta-Panagia is the birthplace of Saint Vissarion, who is the patron of Pyli, Kalambaka and Trikala.
