Wagon Wheel Gap

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The huge La Garita Volcanic Caldera, which blasted over 1000 cubic miles of material into the air about 26 MYA (Mt. St. Helens blasted a mere .6 cubic miles in 1980), has more calderas inside - something like Russian nested dolls: one inside another, inside another. The Bachelor Caldera is mid-sized caldera inside the La Garita Caldera. And the Creede caldera fits inside of that one. Hwy 149 crosses the edge of the Creede Caldera at this point, Wagon Wheel Gap.

Thank You, Marcel, Gyongyi, McSky, & Guy! Here, along the Rio Grande River, is one of the prettiest areas in Colorado.

You write like a geologist. American west is a geological museum ... that's what I've read in books.
