Ny-Ålesund is a town on the island of Spitsbergen (To see this Webcam), in the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. It is one of four cities inhabited the archipelago and the northernmost town in the world, located on the peninsula Brøgger on the south shore of Kongsfjorden. Seasonal population can vary between 30 and 150 people, mostly resulting from the scientific community. Founded in 1916 by the mining company Kings Bay Kull Compani AS, Ny-Ålesund is named by the mining company had its registered office in Ålesund. It ceased operations in 1962 after the explosion of a mine where 21 miners lost their lives. Ny-Ålesund is the starting point for many Arctic expeditions, including Roald Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth and Umberto Nobile in 1926. Roger.
