My first real port of call, the new memorial to the men of Bomber Command who embarked on missions during the Second World War. It was built to commemorate the sacrifice of 55,573 aircrew from Britain, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Poland and other countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, as well as civilians of all nations killed during raids. Queen Elizabeth II opened the memorial on 28th June 2012 accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. The memorial, built of Portland stone, was designed by Liam O'Connor and the sculpture within of seven aircrew was designed by the sculptor Philip Jackson.
