Thanks May. Polarding was the very old practice of cutting trees for firewood and browse at a height where animals couldent eat the re-growth. When coal came along these factories of wood were abandoned, eventually creating many amazing and beautiful sentinels of our past.
I love them because you can feel their age and touch what represents a more sedate and functional past!
Look out for them in Switzerland, short stems and lots of low branches...Ian
