In the old days when the beef packing plant was still opperating this water tower was a way for the illeagle workers from across the border that didn't speak English to know where to go for employment in Palestine.

This plant along with several others were bought out by the Northern Beef Processors and shut down in what esentialy was a hostile takeover of the beef industry in this area to elliminate their competition.

It was a sad day for Palestine when the plant closed even though the event was celebrated in some circles.

Yep Jack, quiet a few people lost their jobs. I was driving for Paltex Trucking here in town and would haul loads of Calhoun Beef to ElPaso, Tyler, San Antonio, Dallas, Laredo, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Cut my runs by half and ended up being out of work because of it. A lot of Palestinean's have no idea just how much beef was processed and shipped from here.

Shortly after taking this, it was torn down. It was a cool piece of history for everyone who grew up seeing it. :-/
