John Dougherty, ceramic mural, Clay County Courthouse plaza, Liberty, MO

John Dougherty, a wealthy landowner and Indian agent, stands before his Little

Dixie plantation, Multnomah. Dougherty witnessed the area's early history unfold

between his birth in 1791 and his death in 1860. As depictedc in these ceramic

murals, Dougherty saw fur traders and hunters arrive to trade with the Indians;

the migration of settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas; the

building of roadways, towns, governments railroads, bridges, homes and churches; and the expansion of commerce on land and river.
