'Knox Presbyterian Church', Oakville - 1888. Taken after torrential rain on Lakeshore Road.

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Knox Presbyterian Church, Oakville began with a simple service in 1833 attended by 11 worshipers in a wooden frame building.

The current red-brick Gothic style building was dedicated in May 1888. It took a year to build at a cost of $16,000. To build it, the church purchased the White Oak Hotel at the corner of Dunn Street and Lakeshore Road.

The hotel had once been a wild drinking place called O'Reilly's Tavern. A later owner took to keeping a live bear chained up to amuse customers. But Oakville residents voted the town dry (no alcohol) in 1881 and by 1887 the owner sold it to the Presbyterians for $1,600. This is a good recipe, how to obtain a cheap real estate. These days, there are almost ;-) as many drinking places as churches. But you can't call Oakville wild!!!

This is my photo #750 on Panoramio. Photo was taken after a tropical rain shower, during Oakville Jazz Festival. But it was Blue sky, nothing but blue sky and sunny from now on.......
