St.Nicholas Monastery (of the cats)

This monastery, perhaps, the oldest in Cyprus. The church dates back to the end of XIV century.According to tradition, monastery was founded in the IV century by St.Helen,Mother of Constantine the Great, who left a piece of the True Cross here. The island at that period was tormented by cerious draught, and snakes multiplied in great numbers. According to the medieval historian,Stephan Lusignan, after St.Helen's departure,Constantine the Great sent Governor Kalokero to Cyprus with a thousand cats to exterminate the snakes.Presently, this is female monastery, but,at least,a dozen of cats I met there during my visit
