French Legation - Austin, Texas

The French Legation is an historic building in east Austin, Texas, built in 1841 to represent the French government in the new Republic of Texas. It is the oldest existing frame structure in Austin. The building and its surroundings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

Gilvan, because it is so hot here in Texas, large portico front porches were necessary to help keep intense heat away from the interior of the home. This artchitecture seemed to be prevalent in French design in America at that time and still is today in Louisiana (adjacent to Texas) where there is a large population of French ancestry inhabitants. Another technique to combat heat was to have homes with large roof overhangs, but this home dooesn't seem to have that feature.
