This is a house, where Alexander Dumas lived during his visit in Russia in 1858. He was invited by the owner of this "datcha" (country house - at that time it was outside the city), earl Grigory A. Kushelev-Bezborodko. This G. Kuselev-Bezborodko was a protoype of Prince Myshkin in "Idiot" by Dostoevsky.

Sonja, thank you! This house is also known because of a very good Russian Comedy "Adventures of Italian in Russia". The Italians looked for treasures that should be under some lion in Petersburg. Olga

Ольга, спасибо за все комментарии. Этот дворец напротив Смольного монастыря, на другом берегу Невы. Там сейчас противотуберкулезный диспансер. А еще - он действующее лицов в "Приключениях итальянцев в России".

This picture well represents the atmosphere in SPB; the endless palaces and historical locations..

Olga I. Yakovenko on January 10, 2009

Timo, thank you for all your answers. This palace, now a hospital, is just on the opposite site from Smolny monastery on the Neva. In the past, made by best architects of thant time it was splendid, now - in a poor state. Our "famous" Gazprom supposes to built around the sky scrappers. The palace will stay, I am sure restored, but the atmosphere of the past will be lost. A small "insect" under the glass.

Thanx for the information, again :) I am aware of this sky-scraper project. Like many others, i can not see why those glass tower views should be erected so close to the magnificent looking historical centre, spoiling a lot the unique atmosphere there.. BR, Timo

Эти львята на панораму тянут! Я бы композицию иначе сделал. Самый правый край фотки занимает голова льва,а дальше тот же сценарий только длиннее, и аппарат опустить бы на сантиметров 40-50
