This makes very interesting reading and is an intriguing sight. These bathers-houses are so Victorian! thank you for visiting my gallery, Jim - I really enjoyed your comment, thank you and for taking the time to meander through ;)

Thank you so much for your friendly visit and interesting feedback sadogashima.

These beach chalets were introduced in the early 20th century after the death of Victoria.

Before these huts, a rather strange contraption called a Bathing Machine was hired for the session by the prudish Victorian lady bathers to hide their modesty.

Here is a link showing how these machines operated.

I am not certain that the men were too keen on the idea, it must have spoiled much of their viewing pleasure.

Kind regards

Jim

I remember these! Had not realised they had gone. Thanks for the capture. The same, very English, theme can be seen around the world.. check out Brighton Beach in Melbourne Victoria for instance. Not the same though... too warm... but less likely to be wiped out by a storm me thinks.

I gave the wrong impression above Russ. These Local Authority chalets re-appear every year on the sea wall, all freshly painted and repaired!!

The East coast of the UK is at the mercy of ever increasing, and unpredictable stormy weather!! Even as I write this reply, stormy, volatile weather is affecting the area! It is more than likely that some of these chalets will have been damaged yet again!

Cheers ;>)
