mmm - most of them seems to walk out of the dungeon??? Do they have a long way to get their work? :))
Yes, mene, they have a very long way to get to their work! I noticed their little parade at least 30 meters away from the hole. I followed it ... and followed it ... and followed it ... and finally saw where they were coming and going!
Yes, Paul, I think "leaf-cutter ants" is a more proper name. And I do love "inspectorants" but that's asking a lot in terms of English familiarity!
Thanks for bringing me across to this image, Marilyn. When talking to Amelia I was aware that somewhere I had seen a photo of leaf-cutter ants, but I couldn't remember where. It was this one of yours. So it is great to see it again, and it is an excellent image revealing their work gangs.
I like Paul's play with words, for after all inspectorants determine which leaf pieces are spat out, so to speak. But is there a third colony of ants that picks up where the others left off? The symbiosis of having leaf-cutter ants to do the cutting and transporting while you remove their waste for your use, recycling it for them could be a good thing.
Thank you for your visit, Ian. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing this.
