Thanks KasiaD, Lavierorange, xenixen, Tony and Marirta for your kind comments on this photo. If your pleasure in looking at this picture is only a fraction of the pleasure I had in taking it, then I am very happy. The young lady sitting on the 'old jetty' is a resident from the nearby dwellings. My wife and I had a very interesting conversation with her whilst she was sitting here. Our (my wife & I) wish at that point was to live near here too. So beautiful and peaceful it was. Herb

although it has been said before, the foreground adds so much to this shot, the way the dark wood veticals and horizontals give variety and interest with the tantilising silhouette adding yet more, then to water and a well placed boat and a couple of bouys, the curve of the flat water suggesting a channel snaking by and beyond the boat ~ then more dark stuff and Oh then a sunset ~ clouds as well ~ a very cal and peaceful shot that demands a gin and tonic in the hand to feel the warmth and enjoy it to its full extend. (Hope this doesn't sound like a load of old pretentious tawddle) but I like it Y* 2
Herb Riddle, on December 7, 2008, said:
I am touched Nick! No, I don't think your comment is pretentious twaddle and this praise coming from you (quite a master of this type of shot in your own right) gives extra weight. All I can say is thanks for this and following my link. Herb

Hello Herb, this is a lovely sunset. I love the reflected colours on the water and the silhouette of the person in the foreground adds a nice touch. Lovely shot!

Looks so serene on the screen, I got mesmerized! Great, black silhouettes make you wonder what's happening in the front. The last peak over the trees by the sun before its off to another part of the world. An perfect and peaceful closure of what must have been a beautiful day.
Such an inspirational picture deserves a starry night. I can only place one more at your firmament but I think mine will be the brightest Y* around.
Thanks for sharing this beauty, Erik
Herb Riddle, on January 30, said:
Erik right behind you here. It was indeed serene. I didn't want to move away from that spot and took many such photo's. As I say higher here, I was really jealous of the young lady who's front door was only 30m from the spot I took the picture from.Cheers again, my friend. Herb

Hello Herb Wonder if we have met at landermere, great shot of my Orkney day angler19+ Think i have some pics of same evening taken from another angle!! IT is new to me so if this works will try pic sending later please reply else last 45mins of two finger typing would have been better consuming wine on east coast up north!!!
Herb Riddle, on February 25, said:
Dodge?, is your boat called Sheila? - It's really great to get this feedback on this very popular photo of mine. You might have noticed that nearly 400 people have viewed it so far. That evening was quite magical for walking, dreaming and taking pictures. I was staying near there with my wife Eileen, in our touring caravan at a Caravan Club location just outside T-L_Socken for one week. During that time I must have taken 30-50 shots of these waters in the glorious sunsets of that week. - The girl sitting at the end of the small jetty (more a plank) actually lived in one of the houses in front of this and near the old defunct Inn. I hope you had a great time whilst moored up there. And -please do post some of your shots on here too, for my friends and I to see.
Grateful thanks once again, and cheers, Herb

Herb, thanks for reply,my boat is "FIZGIG" which has an old definition that means a barbed fishing spear!!.Sheila however is the black houseboat on the way from where you had your c/van to the quay along the sea wall.I am assistant nature warden for this area and grew up here, every sun rise+set is a privilege, your other pic the masted boat is STENOA a Watson lifeboat built 1930 IOW [if memory is not fading!!] was Newhaven lifeboat till 1960 then 5 years as releif L/B then bought by family that live by the quay, she saved 139 lives and was one of the Dunkirk little ships, have been active crew as far back as i can remember, will try to share pics at some point DODGE
Herb Riddle, on February 26, said:
Dodge, I remember that house boat and I think spoke to someone outside of it when passing once - he had a glass of wine in hand! I also have some pictures of that houseboat in the sunset. Thanks for the extra feedback and info which, for me, is really interesting -(I think it would also be for some of my other viewers of this picture too). It must be great to work around there and I am quite jealous. Maybe I will hear from your friends on here too, but feel free to show or reprint some of my pictures for them. Let me know on here if you upload any pics onto your new Panoramio gallery. Cheers Herb
For other viewers here is the STENOA

It a nic Pic Herb but you have spelt the village wrongly, its Thorpe-Le-Soken. I used to go to that area where you took the photo when I was a boy in 1966 and used to catch the small crabs with bacon, I was amazed to see Jellyfish. I wont ever forget those long hot summers on the Naze. enjoy it if you live there.
Herb Riddle, on April 26, said:
Hi Christopher, welcome to my gallery! Thanks for the update on the spelling. I appreciate your help in that matter. Yes, a wonderful spot. I was there with my wife on a one weeks holiday and therefore never lived there. (If only!) It's always nice to receive feedback on a real place which is known by one of my viewers and I can quite understand your childhood love of that place. Were you there on holiday too? Hopefully, I shall visit again some time.
Jani, just seen your comment too. I'm very happy you like this. After seeing your boat picture, your comment is even more valuable me. Please visit again!
Cheers to you both, Herb

This is stunning, Herb - the boat is in exactly the right place to be silhouetted so amazingly. I think this really deserves a Y*!!
Thorpe le Soken is such an unusual name for a place. Do you have any idea why it is so named, Herb? I see you were on holiday, so I'm just curious.
Cheers, Hazel, South Africa
Herb Riddle, on April 28, said:
Hazel, you honour me! I am so pleased you like this. It is one of my best received pictures in my gallery. I still get a 'tingle' when I see it and remember that balmy evening.
As for it's name, all I give you is this History link, sorry cannot find much on it's name history though! As for my holiday, I have a touring caravan and my wife found a very pleasant Certified Location there and we wanted to explore the area which was a dream! Cheers, Herb
