Scandarello Lake

What you see in the FG is Scandarello Lake is an artificial lake formed by the dam built along the Scandarello Creek, a tributary of the Tronto. The dam was built in 1924, is 55 meters high as the third man-made lake in the province of Rieti, with a length of 3 km and an area of ??about 1 km and a depth of 41 m. Its waters feed the hydroelectric power Scandarello, the first of those built along the Valle del Tronto. The lake is surrounded by the peaks of the Monti della Laga and its waters are rich in fish, making it a destination for fishing enthusiasts. In 1944 the dam was nearly blown up after being undermined by Nazi troops. Along the valley of the Tronto lived thousands of people and many places, including Ascoli Piceno, would be hit by the wave of flood, which would have covered the retreat of the German army. Fortunately, 27 Partisans [1], largely amatriciani citizens, succeeded in thwarting the attack. Among them a woman, Marianna Valentini, who sounded the alarm after picking up a ticket warden of the dam, John Blasi, held prisoner. The policeman warned Alfredo Muzi command and was organized as a team headed by Marshal Pasquale Di Sabbath. Meanwhile, Blasi, freed and fearing the worst, began to empty the basin of the lake. On June 17, 1944 Alfredo Muzi, Mario Marri, Francesco Pellicciari and other deminers defused the explosives in the tunnels of the dam and this was decorated with the Silver Medal of Military Valour. They were employed less than 56 tons of explosives and therefore it became necessary to enlist the help of some children. Since June 19, 1994, a marble slab placed on the east side of the dam recalls the courage of the partisans. Monte Gorzano is the highest peak in the Monti della Laga, in northern Lazio, central Italy. It has an elevation of 2,458 metres (8,064 ft) and is also the highest peak of Lazio. It is located on the boundary with the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region.
